Apprenticeships

Many of our students choose to follow an apprenticeship programme once they leave Thomas Bennett and we can support students with their applications. If you are interested in an apprenticeship please see Mrs Keely Willis in the admin office or alternatively keep an eye on the Apprenticeship notice board in F4.

Apprenticeships are a form of work based learning where you would usually spend 3 or 4 days a week with an employer learning a chosen trade. You would also generally spend 1 or 2 days with a training provider, studying towards a relevant qualification however, training can be delivered via a range of methods, such as block release learning, distance learning, on-site training or day release. There are four different levels of apprenticeships you can study depending on your previous qualifications and experience which are:

Intermediate apprenticeship:Level 2

Basic Level of apprenticeship undertaken by school leavers at 16. Minimum 5 GCSE’s at grade 4-9 work towards a knowledge based qualification such as BTEC, and will gain a work-based learning qualification such as an NVQ

Advanced apprenticeship:Level 3

Taken by those who have completed an intermediate apprenticeship or those with 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above.  Advanced apprenticeships are the equivalent to two A-level passes.

Higher apprenticeship:Level 4-7

Seen as the major alternative to university and higher education, higher apprenticeships are usually equivalent to a foundation degree, but can go as far as to equal a masters.

To be eligible for an apprenticeship in England you must meet the following requirements: -

You must currently be living in England. - You also must not be in full time education at the start of your apprenticeship - Must be past the last Friday in June within the school year when you will turn 16 (e.g. you could be 15 when finishing school and still apply for an apprenticeship if your birthday is before the start of the next academic year) If you are applying for an apprenticeship and do not hold a level 2 English and Maths qualification by law you will be given the opportunity to achieve this as part of your apprenticeship.
